Dye-Sublimation Fabric Printing: Gazebos and Flags Outdoors, Fabric Frames and Covers Indoors

Walk any expo hall or sports field in Cape Town and the branding that looks best up close is almost always fabric: a gazebo canopy with colour that runs edge to edge, a telescopic flag that reads from the car park, a fabric wall in a showroom with no glare and no seams. The reason is the printing process. Dye-sublimation does not put ink on the fabric. It dyes the colour into it.
This guide explains how dye-sublimation works, then walks through where it earns its keep: outdoor branding with gazebos, flags and banners, and the indoor opportunities that fabric opens up, from tension frames and lightboxes to pop-up counters and covers for the security gates at a shop entrance. Everything here is made in our Cape Town factory.
Dye-sublimation prints your artwork onto transfer paper, then a heat press turns the ink into a gas that bonds into polyester fibres. The colour becomes part of the fabric, so it does not crack, peel or flake, it folds into a carry bag, and it can be washed. It only works on polyester, which is why every product below is built on polyester textiles. Outdoors, that means gazebos, telescopic and sharkfin banners, pole flags and parasols. Indoors, it means banner walls, fabric tension frames, lightboxes, sock banners, counters, tablecloths and made-to-measure covers for almost any fixture.
How dye-sublimation printing works
Most printing lays ink on top of a surface. Dye-sublimation is different, and the difference is the whole point:
- Print. Your artwork is printed in reverse onto transfer paper on a wide-format dye-sublimation printer using sublimation inks. Our printers run up to 3.2 m wide, so a gazebo canopy panel, a banner wall skin or a full-height wall graphic prints in one piece.
- Transfer. The paper and the polyester fabric pass through a heat press together. Under heat and pressure the solid ink sublimates, turning straight into a gas, and bonds into the polyester fibres.
- Cool. As the fabric cools the colour is locked inside the fibre. There is no film, coating or layer on the surface. The fabric feels exactly like unprinted fabric, and the print is as flexible and as washable as the cloth itself.
- Sew and finish. Our sewing department hems the panels and adds whatever the product needs: pole pockets and sleeves for flags, Velcro strips for gazebo walls, silicone edging for tension frames, elastic for stretch covers. Then the print is paired with its hardware and packed in its bag.
Because the colour is in the fibre, dye-sublimated fabric gives you deep, saturated colour with a soft matte finish and no glare under event or shop lighting. It also means the design can show through to the back of a light flag fabric, which is how a single-sided flag reads from both sides.
Two honest limits. Dye-sublimation only bonds to polyester, so it cannot be used on cotton, and it has no white ink: white in your design is the white of the fabric. And like every printed textile, it will fade under constant long-term sun. Outdoor displays that come down between events last far longer than ones left up all year.
Why fabric for branding
Outdoor branding with dye-sublimation
Outdoors, fabric wins on weight, wind and colour. A printed canopy or flag has to travel, go up in minutes, move in the south-easter without tearing and still look right on camera. Sizes below are our standard options; most products can also be made to a custom size.
| Display | Best for | Standard sizes |
|---|---|---|
| Branded gazebo | Activations, expos, sports days, market stalls | 3 × 3 m Econo; 2 × 2 and 3 × 3 m Standard; 2 × 2, 3 × 3, 4.5 × 3 and 6 × 3 m Deluxe |
| Gazebo wall skins | Closing a stand, blocking wind, more branding | Full or half height, 2 × 2, 3 × 3, 3 × 4.5 and 3 × 6 m |
| Telescopic banner | Text-heavy logos that need a rectangular face | 2, 3 and 4 m high |
| Sharkfin banner | A curved flag that moves with the wind; windy sites | 2, 3 and 4 m high |
| Pole flag | Premises, clubs, schools, dealerships, on your flagpole | 900 × 600 mm, 1,800 × 1,200 mm, custom |
| Flag fountain | Shopfronts, sports fields, expo stands, freestanding | 4 or 5 flags, 5 to 6 m tall |
| Parasol | Cafés, terraces, pool decks, field-side stands | 2 × 2, 2.2 × 2.2 and 3 × 3 m |
| Fabric bunting | Perimeters, forecourts, semi-permanent runs | 300 × 200 or 200 × 150 mm flags, 15 m packs or custom |

- Econo Steel: 3 × 3 m, 170 gsm polyester canvas, an economical steel frame
- Standard Steel: 2 × 2 or 3 × 3 m, 240 gsm weather-resistant canvas, a heavy-duty steel frame
- Deluxe Aluminium: 2 × 2, 3 × 3, 4.5 × 3 or 6 × 3 m, 240 gsm canvas, an aluminium frame
- In the kit: printed canopy, frame, carry bag, ropes and ground spikes
A branded gazebo is the anchor of an outdoor stand: shelter for your team, a wall of colour for the crowd, and a landmark people can find. Choose 2 × 2 m for a single market table, 3 × 3 m for a standard activation or expo stand, and 4.5 × 3 or 6 × 3 m when a whole team, a bar or a hospitality area has to fit under one roof. Add wall skins to close the stand off or block the wind: full-height or half-height, fastened between the legs with 25 mm industrial Velcro, so they retrofit onto most standard aluminium or steel frames, including ones you already own. Gazebo production typically takes three to five working days from artwork approval.

- Heights: 2, 3 and 4 m
- Shape: a rectangular face with more branding area at the top, the choice for text-heavy logos
- Fabric: Ultrasheen textile, printed for show-through to both sides
- In the kit: print, reinforced vertical pole set, 600 mm ground spike, nylon carry bag

- Heights: 2, 3 and 4 m
- Shape: a curved, aerodynamic fin on a flexible pole that stays taut and moves with the wind
- Fabric: Ultrasheen textile, printed for show-through to both sides
- In the kit: print, reinforced flexible pole set, 600 mm ground spike, nylon carry bag
Telescopic or sharkfin? Choose telescopic when the logo or message needs a straight rectangle to read well. Choose sharkfin for the classic curved silhouette and for windy sites, where the flexible pole lets the flag move instead of fighting the wind. Both come in 2, 3 and 4 m heights and both are supplied as complete sets.

- Pole flags: 900 × 600 mm, 1,800 × 1,200 mm or made to your flagpole, with eyelets or a pole pocket, single or double-sided
- Flag fountains: four or five flags on one steel base, 5 to 6 m tall, with a polyester oxford carry bag
- Fabric: knitted polyester flag fabric with an anti-fray finish
- Reskin: keep the hardware and order replacement flags
A single-sided flag shows your design in reverse on the back, which suits most logos. Choose a double-sided flag, made from two panels sewn back to back, when text must read correctly from both directions. Round out an outdoor stand with branded parasols over the tables, fabric or PVC bunting along the fence, A-frame banners with fabric panels on the sideline, and hand-held flags for the crowd.
Indoor branding opportunities
Indoors, the brief changes from being seen at a distance to looking flawless up close, on camera and under shop lighting. That is where dye-sublimated fabric is at its best, and where most businesses have more opportunities than they realise. Almost any fixture with a shape can carry a printed, tensioned fabric cover.
| Display | Best for | Standard sizes |
|---|---|---|
| Banner wall | Backdrops, press walls, step-and-repeat, media walls | Straight 1.5 to 4.5 m wide; curved 2.15 to 4.23 m wide; 2.25 m high |
| Fabric tension frame | Showrooms, boardrooms, reception walls, exhibition graphics | 1 × 1 m up to 2 × 3 m and 2.5 × 2.5 m, plus A sizes |
| Fabric lightbox | Illuminated wall or freestanding graphics in retail and reception | Made to your size, wall-mounted or freestanding |
| Sock banner | Retail, passageways, press backdrops | 800 mm and 2,280 mm wide, up to 3 m high |
| Pop-up fabric counter | Sampling, registration, demonstrations, with a shelf inside | Made to specification |
| Tablecloth | Registration desks, expo tables, in-store promotions | Made to your table; packages with a 1,800 × 700 mm trestle |
| Security-gate covers | Branding the anti-theft pedestals at a shop entrance | Made to measure for your gates |
| Seamless wallpaper | Full-height feature walls with no joins | Made to your wall |
| Indoor flags | Receptions, stages, boardrooms | Desk and floor-standing, on poles and bases |

- Straight: 1,500, 2,250, 3,000, 3,750 or 4,500 mm wide by 2,250 mm high
- Curved: 2,150, 2,800, 3,500 or 4,230 mm wide, with optional wing panels that wrap the frame
- Fabric: non-glare Bannerweave with a Velcro perimeter for a drum-tight fit
- In the kit: printed skin, collapsible aluminium accordion frame, carry bag

- Sizes: 1,000 × 1,000, 1,500 × 1,500, 2,000 × 1,000, 2,000 × 1,500, 3,000 × 1,000, 2,000 × 3,000 and 2,500 × 2,500 mm, plus A sizes
- Frame: slimline aluminium extrusion that sits flush against the wall
- Fabric: stretch matrix polyester with a silicone edge that push-fits into the channel
- Reskin: front-loading, so a new graphic swaps in without tools
A fabric tension frame is the cleanest way to put a large graphic on a wall: a slim aluminium frame, a printed skin with a silicone edge pushed into the channel, no glass, no glare and no creases. Because the skin loads from the front, a showroom or reception can change its message in minutes. The same idea, lit from behind, gives you a fabric lightbox: a tension-fabric graphic in an illuminated frame, made to your size as a wall-mounted or freestanding unit, for retail windows, reception walls and exhibition stands. Ask us for a lightbox quote with your dimensions.

- Widths: 800 mm for a vertical banner, 2,280 mm for a backdrop up to 3 m high
- Fabric: a double-sided stretch polyester sleeve that slides over the frame like a sock
- Frame: click-lock aluminium tubes with stabilising feet
- In the kit: frame, base plate, printed sleeve, canvas transit bag
The sock banner shows the other trick of stretch polyester: a printed sleeve that slides over a frame and pulls itself tight. The same construction dresses a pop-up fabric counter, a folding counter with a printed stretch skin and a shelf inside for stock and samples, and it is how we brand the fixtures a shop already has. Security-gate covers are the best example: the anti-theft pedestals at a store entrance are the first thing every customer walks past, and a made-to-measure stretch cover turns them into branding for a launch, a season or a sale, then comes off without a trace. If a fixture has a shape, from a plinth or a podium to a directors chair, we can make a cover for it.

- Loose fit: a draped throw in 240 gsm polyester canvas that hides storage under the table
- Stretch: a fitted elastane cover that hooks under the feet and stays put outdoors
- Sizing: made to the table you use; packages include a 1,800 × 700 mm folding trestle
- Care: cool wash, hang to dry, a cool iron or steamer for fold lines
A printed tablecloth turns a bare trestle into a branded counter in under a minute. Choose loose fit if you use different tables at different venues; choose stretch for a smooth, wrinkle-free look that does not flap in the wind. If you need the table as well, see our tablecloth and table packages. For a permanent feature wall, our seamless wallpaper is printed on 3.2 m wide fabric wallcovering, so a full wall height runs with no joins, and indoor flags on desk and floor bases give receptions and stages a sense of occasion.
One note on pull-up banners: our standard 840 × 2,000 mm pull-up banner is a PVC print in a roller base, not fabric. If you want the fabric look in a portable vertical format, the 800 mm sock banner is the fabric answer.
Care and lifespan
Dye-sublimated fabric is tough, but outdoors it is still fabric in the weather. A few habits make the difference between a display that lasts a season and one that lasts years:
- Sun. Constant long-term exposure fades any printed textile. Take flags, fountains and parasols down between events and store them out of the sun. Our display fabrics and standard parasols carry a three-month limited print-fade warranty.
- Wind. Peg and rope a gazebo with the spikes and ropes in its toolkit, close parasols in strong wind, and take flag fountains down in very strong wind. Weigh or peg an A-frame on a windy field.
- Washing. Fabric displays can be gently cleaned. Tablecloths, covers and flags take a cool wash, hung to dry, with a cool iron or a steamer to lift fold lines before the next event.
- Flags. Every outdoor flag wears at the fly edge. Trim and re-hem a fraying edge early, and keep a spare so your pole is never bare.
Fabric or PVC?
Fabric is the choice when colour depth, a glare-free finish, light weight and show-through matter: gazebos, flags, banner walls, tension frames, covers and tablecloths. PVC still earns its place where a display must be wiped clean and fully opaque: our standard pull-up banners, block-out A-frame panels and PVC bunting for long outdoor runs. A-frames and bunting come in both, so you can match the material to the venue.
How we make fabric displays in Cape Town
Everything above is made under one roof at our factory in Atlas Gardens, Cape Farms, Cape Town, backed by 24-hour operations. Gazebos typically take three to five working days from artwork approval; most other fabric displays follow a similar timeline, and your quote states it.
For artwork, supply a vector PDF, AI or EPS file, or a high-resolution image at the proportions of the product. Keep logos bold and text large on flags, which are read while moving, tell us whether a flag must read correctly from both sides, and ask us for the template for your tablecloth size or the measurements we need for a cover. Artwork and turnaround questions are answered in our Help Centre. Agencies and print brokers can produce the whole range through our Reseller Partner Programme, and you can browse the full expos, events and display branding range.
Frequently asked questions
What is dye-sublimation printing?
A printing process for polyester fabric. The artwork is printed onto transfer paper with sublimation inks, then heat-pressed onto the fabric, where the ink turns into a gas and bonds into the fibres. The colour becomes part of the fabric rather than a layer on it.
Does dye-sublimation fade in the sun?
Under constant long-term exposure, yes, like every printed textile. Displays that come down between events last far longer. Our display fabrics and standard parasols carry a three-month limited print-fade warranty.
Can I wash a printed tablecloth, cover or flag?
Yes. Wash gently in cool water, hang to dry and use a cool iron or a steamer for fold lines. Fabric backdrops and tension-frame skins can be gently cleaned and cool-ironed too.
Telescopic or sharkfin banner?
Telescopic gives a rectangular face with more branding area at the top, which suits text-heavy logos. Sharkfin gives the classic curved silhouette on a flexible pole that moves with the wind. Both come in 2, 3 and 4 m heights as complete sets with pole, spike and bag.
Should I order single-sided or double-sided flags?
Single-sided flags show the design through to the back in reverse, which suits most logos. Order double-sided, two panels sewn back to back, when text must read correctly from both directions.
What size gazebo do I need?
2 × 2 m covers a single table or stall. 3 × 3 m is the standard activation and expo size. Choose 4.5 × 3 or 6 × 3 m when a team, a bar or a hospitality area must fit under one roof.
What comes with a branded gazebo?
The printed canopy, the folding frame, a heavy-duty carry bag and a toolkit of ropes and ground spikes. Full-height or half-height printed walls are added separately.
Can you brand the security gates at my shop entrance?
Yes. We make stretch fabric covers to measure for the anti-theft pedestals at a store entrance, printed in full colour, so they carry your campaign and come off cleanly afterwards. Send us the gate dimensions or a photo with a tape measure in it.
Do you make fabric lightboxes?
Yes. A fabric lightbox is a tension-fabric graphic in an illuminated frame, wall-mounted or freestanding, made to your size. Tell us where it will stand and the dimensions and we will quote the frame, graphic and lighting together.
Can I reuse my hardware with a new print?
Yes. Gazebo canopies and walls, telescopic and sharkfin flags, pole flags, flag fountains, parasols, banner walls, tension frames and covers all take a new printed skin on the hardware you already own.
How long does a fabric display take to make?
Gazebos typically take three to five working days from artwork approval, and most other fabric displays follow a similar timeline. Your quote states the date, and rush work is quoted case by case.
Do you make pull-up banners in fabric?
Our standard pull-up banner is a PVC print in a classic roller base. For a fabric finish in a portable vertical format, choose an 800 mm sock banner, or a fabric tension frame for a wall.
Ready to brand your next event or store?
Tell us the venue, the space you have and the fixtures you want covered, and send your artwork or a rough idea. We will suggest a set of gazebos, flags, frames or covers, print it in our Cape Town factory and pack it ready to travel.
